About hiq-general	English (USA)
hiq-general is a general discussion list for members of the high-IQ community. It is primarily for past or current members of HIQ societies at or above the 1:1000 level, but we'll consider requests to join from people outside the community, of intellect, accomplishment, and even temperament. It provides an environment where intellectual rigor is greeted with civility. Too many of the members of HIQ societies walk away from discussion lists due to ad hominem attacks, abusive language, and the basic bad manners of a few. Consequently, a potentially engaging topic can be drowned in noise. hiq-general is a place where participants can have stimulating and thought-provoking discussions separated from the cruft. While a posting may be best-suited for a different list on this site, no topics are inherently off-limits. However, remember that when discussing potentially discordant topics, or discussing an area of expertise, you may find your views challenged or your remarks addressed by someone who is an expert on a subject. While this can lead to flaring tempers and maltreatment in other places, such is not the case here. Instead of insults directed toward persons or a view when we disagree, we use reason and research. It is quite a rewarding process. It goes without saying that civility is the key to what makes hiq-general so appealing to many, and the group's moderators ensure that aspect of our environment never changes. We're pretty good at recognizing bad behavior, veiled or overt. In the rare instance someone is not aware they are crossing the line, they will get a friendly reminder to keep it nice. If this doesn't work for them, then there are always other lists! And they'll certainly enjoy posting there instead of here. Polite curiosity is welcome here, and so are you. This group is what you make it. Lists hosted on this site are private. Participants are expected to be civil, on-topic, and not hostile. The list owner reserves the right to deny, limit, or remove access to anyone at any time for any reason. When signing up, your name is not optional, despite the form. Using hiq-general
To post a message to all the list members, send email to hiq-general@lists.righttail.net. You can subscribe to the list, or change your existing subscription, in the sections below.
Subscribing to hiq-general
Subscribe to hiq-general by filling out the following form. You will be sent email requesting confirmation, to prevent others from gratuitously subscribing you. Once confirmation is received, your request will be held for approval by the list moderator. You will be notified of the moderator's decision by email. This is also a private list, which means that the list of members is not available to non-members. Your email address:   Your name (optional):   You may enter a privacy password below. This provides only mild security, but should prevent others from messing with your subscription. Do not use a valuable password as it will occasionally be emailed back to you in cleartext. If you choose not to enter a password, one will be automatically generated for you, and it will be sent to you once you've confirmed your subscription.
